I would probably go for 3.5 stars if I could. This is an Intermediate level book about programming with Python. Part of what I feel detracts from the reader's experience is the poor quality of some of the screen dumps, however these don't seem to occur often and don't seem to be crucial. The bulk of the text is clear and quite easy to read. When I tried following along by typing in some of the examples however, it quickly became unclear as to how much some blocks of code should be indented. (Turns out Python is rather dependent on how code is indented!)It is fairly typical for code that continues onto the next page, for example, to lose its indentation altogether, leaving the reader a little unsure. You can download the source code for each example, however this sort of defeats the purpose.I typed in the code to the 'Bricks' game for example, and after fixing a few typos, I had the game running.But when it came to the 'Snake' project, there were so many issues, including the indentation I described above, that it took quite a while before I had this rather simple game running at all.I especially appreciate the author's chapter on Model View Controller, and the 'Robot' example. I have always struggled with the MVC concept, usually is because of the complexity of the language used (C++) and the project at hand.Python can make working with classes a breeze. The 'Robot' example is short and to the point, but powerful and useful!The last example, 'Invaders', brings together everything the reader has learned. It is a lot to digest because there are several different classes across many files. Still I was hopeful, after typing in the code, that my experience would be better than before. Instead, I had a similar experience to that with the 'Snake' example. The game as I typed it just did not work. (I downloaded the code from the author's website, and it works fine.)I then compared each of the files and after fixing a few discrepancies, the one I typed in still did not work.Most people may not bother to type in the example source code, but I wanted to try a learn-as-you-go approach, and part of that included correct indentation, crucial for Python programming.Considering that the 'Invaders' example, essentially recreates the heart of the old classic game, 'Space Invaders', I am rather impressed with the power and flexibility of Python, and the author's ability to present this in his book.This text could suffice as the textbook for an intermediate to advanced programming course. The author covers some aspects of Object Oriented Programming that are reminiscent of some of my programming lessons at the university level.Despite any frustration on my part, I have expanded my understanding of Python programming, especially when it comes to object-oriented programming and making use of the Model / View / Controller and Finite State Machine design patterns.
